The notch probably was the “in” thing for the past 2 years which started with the Iphone X’s design. The notch then evolved in many shapes and sizes as the months go along.
Drawings of a new smartphone design surfaced as Xiaomi filled for patent of this new design, well its called the Reverse Notch. You can see the protruded design where the notch sticks out of the top edge of the phone.
